Sandra had been unable to work for around a decade owing to a degenerative back condition and had experienced depression for five years. In the switchover from Incapacity Benefit to Employment and Support Allowance, she was assessed as fit for work and lost her benefits. She appealed against the decision, but it was upheld. Worried about her and her husband’s income, a few days later, she took an overdose. The coroner said, “We can only feel so sad for what must have been going through her mind. Her husband had gone off to work, she was alone and I think things must have just swept over her and suddenly she found her life was intolerable and she did not feel she was able to continue with it.”
